Fort Collins, Colorado

Chips from I-25, cracks from the defroster

Between the interstate work and the run up the Poudre Canyon on CO-14, Fort Collins windshields collect a lot of gravel. That part is unremarkable. What catches people out is how the chip turns into a crack, and it is usually not another rock.

It is the temperature swing. Glass that has been sitting at twenty degrees overnight, hit with a blast of defroster heat on full, expands unevenly around the weak point — and a chip that looked stable all summer runs out across the glass in seconds. Northern Colorado has an unusually large daily temperature range, which is why this happens here more than in most places.

The practical advice is dull but effective: get chips repaired before the first hard freeze, and in the meantime warm the vehicle gradually rather than aiming the defroster straight at a cold windshield.

We repair chips for drivers throughout Old Town, Midtown, Harmony, Timberline, Fossil Creek, Campus West and the Front Range Village area and ZIP codes 80521–80528.

The single most useful habit in Fort Collins has nothing to do with us: on a cold morning, warm the vehicle gradually instead of putting the defroster straight on high. Glass that has been at twenty degrees overnight expands unevenly when it is blasted with heat, and that is what turns a chip that has been sitting quietly into a crack running across the glass. Do that much and most chips will still be repairable when you get to us.

Getting it done from Fort Collins

This is one of the two services we bring to you, so a Fort Collins chip does not need a trip to Windsor at all. We come to your home or your work, and the repair takes about half an hour while the vehicle stays where it is parked.

Long cracks, damage that has reached the edge of the glass and chips sitting in the driver’s line of sight are replacement territory; most everything else repairs. Text a photo to 970‑286‑0886 and we will tell you which one you have — see what a repair involves.

Windshield Repair FAQ

I picked up a chip in the Poudre Canyon on CO-14. Can you fix it?

Yes, if the glass has not already cracked. Canyon chips tend to be sharper because the rock is bigger, but sharp and deep are different things, and most still repair cleanly. The risk is the first hard frost: cold glass plus a hot defroster is what turns a stable chip into a crack.

My chip has been there for months and has not moved — do I still need it repaired?

A stable chip in summer is not a stable chip in January. Most cracks we see started as a chip that had been fine for months and then met a cold night followed by a hot defroster. If it is still clean, it is still repairable, and that window closes over winter.

Is there anything I should do before I bring the chip in?

Keep it dry and keep it clean. A piece of clear tape over the chip keeps road grime and water out, which is what makes the difference between a clean repair and a cloudy one. Do not try to clean inside the break, and avoid aiming a hot defroster straight at cold glass.
